[ DEEP BREATH ]
Out where I live, there is this convention called ColossalCon. It’s held at an indoor waterpark and convention center. My first year attending was about five years ago. I was excited to debut my Doctor Who cosplay, the blue suit version of the Tenth Doctor. I honestly didn’t think anyone would recognize me, but so many did
Thus I took it upon myself to become completely in-character while in that cosplay. I moved around the convention center, sonic screwdriver scanning anyone or anything I could. I popped into panel rooms trying to scan for Daleks. Genuinely, most people were extremely amused. I was one of only a handful of Doctor cosplayers, and the others I met were extremely amiable.
Friday night wasn’t very eventful. I went to the ‘Glowstick Dance’ as they call it, as the Doctor, and spent time with my friends. However, on Saturday night, things got a bit strange. I was in the karaoke room when lights started flashing on the walls, it only took a moment to realize they were the fire indicators. No one else took notice, so I calmly got to my feet, and proclaimed that the fire alarms were going off, and we needed to evacuate.
With the help of some of the staff, I evacuated the room, following others outside. Everyone was made to leave. Then of course, it started to rain extremely hard. People returned to their hotel rooms as the staff attempted to locate what had set off the alarm. [We’d later learn it was a malfunction from all the heat of the bodies in the ‘Glowstick Dance/Rave’.]
However, a few hours later [after participating in an amusing game of ninja], I began to wander the halls of the hotel and found that people were being evacuated from their rooms to the basement. Unsure as to why, I asked the manager who was evacuating people [mind you, by lightly knocking on their doors]. And was informed there was a tornado warning.
Thus, I offered my services to assist in the evacuation, being trained in handling disasters. The manager agreed and permitted myself and two friends to assist in the evacuation. Somehow, I couldn’t get out of my David Tennant accent, so persons were being evacuated by The Doctor [The next day, a man remarked to me he would have been scared shitless under normal circumstances, but the fact that I was behaving so much like The Doctor made him feel like he was in an episode of the show.]
After everyone was evacuated to the massively large basement [voice actors included, to the glee of one of my dear friends, as J. Michael Tatum comforted her and others], we waited. Fortunately, the tornado only touched down two miles away, so we were safe.
The next day there was a large banner by the registration desk bearing the name TORNADOCON. For those who attended, that was the new nickname for the convention itself. I was given the title ‘Tornadocon Doctor’ and everyone was content and happy. [Aside from one or two snafus with the con staff, which were cleared up by the manager whom I’d assisted.]
AND THAT, DEAR READER IS HOW STELLA GOT HER GROOVE BA— I mean, how I got my nickname.
