Pretties and Uglies are books of the Uglies trilogy by Scott Westerfield. The story is futuristic, but I don't know if it can be classified as sci-fi.

The story centres around a nearly-16 year old girl, Tally, and her friend, Shay. In their world, people are called uglies until they are 16 years old, when they are all given plastic surgeries to make them all look beautiful (hence they call them "Pretties"), and go to live in the nicer part of the city.

The surgeries were intended to settle disputes, but it turns out that the surgeries cause brain damage that makes them unhappy, etc.

I don't know about the rest--they used to have it here, looks good. May try to get it sometime later.

The books are also followed by the third book in the trilogy, Specials (after the "Specials", who are more or less evil Pretties). There is also an additional 4th book, Extras, due to be out later in the year.

I have quite a few to mention:

1. Of Mice and Men, John Steinbeck
2. The Pearl, also John Steinbeck
3. A Wrinkle in Time, Madeleine L'Engle
4. The Hobbit, J.R.R. Tolkein (I'm suprised it wasn't metioned before, yet LotR was...)
5. The Giver, Lois Lowry
6. On Writing, Steven King
7. The Dead Zone, also Steven King
8. Among the Hidden, Margaret Peterson Haddix
9. The Wizard of Oz, Frank Baum
10. Fahrenheit 451, Ray Bradbury
11. Sabriel, Garth Nix
It's time I've started coming back here more often.

Well, even though The Hobbit is the prequel to LotR, when you read them you'll be able to tell instantly that they're two different stories. (or at least I'm able to...) I guess if you wanted to put them all in a group you'd call it the Middle Earth books. (which would then include most of Tolkien's works)

That sounded strange and reminded me of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. XD

Immortal wrote:...trilogy, have you read all four?

Well, I think there are only three books. Across the Wall would count as some sort of companion book, no? I'm not sure but when I talk about the Old Kingdom Trilogy, it's usually about the three books: Sabriel, Lirael and Abhorsen.

But yes, I have read them and I enjoyed them very much. Lirael is sitting on my bookshelf right now. XD

The Bartimaeus Trilogy is one of my favourite too.. The ending is perfect and the characters are fantastic.

Sydney: I've never read The Silence of the Lambs but I've been told by film-viewers that it's quite good.. The latest one is coming out isn't it? Hannibal Rising or something?

I shall read that book sometime, I think.

I'm sure I've read them all at some point, but I can't remeber what all of them are about. They're all good books, though.

Heh, yeah, trilogies (except for HHGTG) are three books. Tri means three, you know. Across the Wall isn't part of the Old Kingdom trilogy; it mostly consists of stories set in other universes. Only one out of, I dunno, twelve or so, actually has anything to do with Old Kingdom. And it was highly disappointing to read.

I know now, sorry. And yes it was very disappointing. I kept thinking it would be a continuation, but when I bought the book it was not the case.

CaptainNemo wrote:Are we talking about graphic novels as well? If so, then...

Kingdom Come: One of my favorite books of all time, and, IMO, the greatest comic book ever made.

The Dark Knight Returns: Very dark, and extremely good.

The Watchmen: Overrated, but still worth a read if you have the time.

Graphic Novels I want to read:

Batman: Year One

Marvels

Earth X

Whilst these are not 'real' books as Immortal so bluntly said i personally would recommend that everyone try some graphic novels/ comic books at some point in their life and the books Captain Nemo mentioned are legends- though not necessarily typical of comics of which for me Dark Knight Returns is the best.

Best place to start reading comics....

I don't know- though most libraries will have a collection of some sort to dip into.

If anyone did want to try reading comics places to start are either the intellectual and heavy comics mentioned above or the lighter but still awesome comics such as Runaways by Brian K. Vaughan; anything with Ultimate in the title (Ultimate Spiderman etc.)

Yes, Hannibal Rising has just disappeared from theaters as I started to read the books *waits for DVD*. I started reading the books because I though that the young actor that played Hannibal was hot. xD

I've read all of them, and they are quite entertaining along with the movies.

OMG, YES! YES! YES!!! I looove Nathaniel. If you have never read the Bartimaeus trilogy, go read it now.

*spoiler*

Nasty, nasty, nassssty Jon for killing off my Nathaniel. He died a heroes death, though. I cried so hard when Nathaniel died. I wish that Bartimaeus could find a door to death through the Other Place and bring Nathaniel back so he and Kitty could hook up. HUGE Nate/Kitty shipper!

*end spoiler*

The Dream Merchant is also a good book...
