Do you think TTP was darker then some of the other books?

Postby Kelsey Rain (: » Tue Jan 19, 2010 3:39 am

Something that just kind of came to mind. I get this feeling, when I read it, that it's darker. The scenes where Holly is being chased through the souk and when she is captured, and when Artemis is in Opal's lab, and basically the whole end, I feel were pretty dark.

What do you think?

I totally agree. The little Artemis seemed so....cold blooded? He was willing to kill that poor lemur just so older Artemis couldn't have him. :(

By the way how do you pronounce souq?

Well, I found 'lil Arty about as dark as Book 1 Arty. Cold, calculating - just lost his father and is slowly losing his mother, an entire criminal empire is left to him, etc. He had to be cold-blooded to make through all that...

But yeah, TTP focused on some more serious issues. Like the Extinctionists and what they were doing, unwillingly betraying a friend's trust, (can't really say kidnapping and death and/or near-death - kind of a trend by now), etc. And the last third of the book? Kinda creepy, it was. What with the sucking brain fluid from animals and... barrels of pig fat... Arty's mother...

Although, I think TOD definitely has the darkest scene of the series...

Of all of them, I thought TOD and TLC were the dark ones.

Spoiler:
In TOD, the Artemis that you KNOW is good suddenly reverts back to being a cagey, calculating, uncaring guy again--utterly snubbing his newfound friendship with Holly, Commander Root is brutally murdered and Holly is to blame, not to mention that graphic scene where Artemis's rib punches through his skin.

In TLC, the beginnig wasn't all that dark, but as soon as the bomb entered the picture things got really intense. Butler is SEPARATED from Artemis, they're stranded on Hybras in the middle of a time-tunnel--so completely far away from earth that it's a difficulty just thinking about it. If they don't convince a psychopathic cult-like demon leader to help them before he murders them all, then they'll be trapped forever. Plus, there's the small matter of the BOMB that's going to explode. Artemis's parents think he's dead because he's been gone for three YEARS. Plus, you witness the murder of HOLLY, No1, and Qwan in rapid succession. It had a big "hopeless"-feeling streak in the middle, a bit like the last Lord of the Rings movie.

The whole lemur thing, the bad guy that's kind of cheezy, the kiss, Myles and Beckett, the horribly cliched reappearance of Opal--to me this took away from the 'dark' side of the book.

I would say that perhaps the darker elements are for his older readers. I was 10 when I read the first AF and now I'm starting university. Eoin's just trying to keep his intial readers (who are now much older) and the ones who have only picked up his books recently. I'm beyond the target audience (8-13) but,oh well, I stil enjoy reading his books.

souq = sook i think. Tis what my geomography teacher told me, and she speaks with 3 accents every lesson. french irish and american. so she must be right! (she puts them on, by the way, no disrespect! ♥)
and yeah, I agree, its JUST like the Harry Potter books. the first started out very innocent, but just like Potter, he grew up and worse and worse things happenedd to him. I think it adds to the whole effect, it makes it more gripping, thrlling!

I don't think the AF books were ever quite as innocent as the first Harry Potter book. That's part of what I like about AF the most- it's not just obvius good vs. obvious evil.

'Specially if your protagnonist is somewhat an antagonist at times ;)

And I'm way beyond his target audience too. I know many people who are beyond (8-13). I'm 16, my friend is 17 and my other friend is 19 and we all love AF :D

Funny...cuz we're all drama kids too oO

Not really. A few of the characters were cold, as they usually are, but not the book. Although there were some more action, romance, and twists in the book. I like it just next to TOD, which is my favorite.

TOD is my favorite, too-- I thought he got the mix of humor, darkness, and intelligence really well in that book. The three books where I thought he was really on his game were TAI, TEC, and TOD, but TLC was really up there, too.

Now I think about it, I think TOD was a bit dark, but not like TTP. Idk, just the atomsphere felt...more mature....even though there were corny bits (Opal...Kronski...really?)
