"Airman" - Official AFC Discussion Thread

Postby Matt » Tue Jun 12, 2007 11:43 pm

"Airman," Eoin's next project, is a historial sci-fi adventure tale set in the 19th Century, and is scheduled for a release next January, we hope to get a bit more information soon, but for now, how does this sound? It sounds a little different for me, but I'm really looking forward to it! What about you?

Rolling Eyes Haven't you read anything by Jules Verne? He's like, only the single greatest author of science fiction EVER. And he wrote in the late 19th century. (Methinks...Can't remember when he wrote)

Anywho, thanks for the tip, Matt! I'll be sure to read it ASAP. *waits* It sounds really really good. I dig anything by Colfer!

Kinda sounds like The Supernaturalists Except instead of being in the 22nd century its in the 19th.

And Immortal, its Science Fiction FICTION! It's just made up it's like Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde or Captain Nemo or Twenty Thousand Leagues under the sea whatever it's called Or yeah like Arty said Jules Verne(hey didn't he write both those book I pointed out?) Or his mysterious island which has Captain Nemo in it.

Yep, science fiction in the 19th century is not a new concept. Neil Gaiman authored a Marvel comic book that was about the X-Men in Elizabethan England. Imagine that...

The title also reminds me of this Japanese anime called 'Steamboy', also set in the 19th cent.

I think it sounds great! I like historical novels and I shall definetly read this one! ^^ I've read many stories by Jules Verne and if it's the same kind of story, It'll probably be pretty good. Smile

I'm really looking forward to it, everything I've read by Colfer I've enjoyed, so there's no reason this'll be any different. I just wish they'd release a buit more information on it, but oh well... xD

I know I'm double posting, but it's relevant so it's allowed.

Just so you know, our new interview with Eoin Colfer (which can be found here) gives a LOT of new information on Airman:

Airman is set in the 1890's on the Saltee Islands, a tiny monarchy off the Irish coast. When Conor Broekhart, a promising young scientist, witnesses the king's murder, he is thrown into a prison mad wing to protect the secret. Conor spends his time in prison designing a flying machine that will fly him to freedom. Years pass and finally his chance arrives....

Ohh fictional islands...sounds like my novel in non-progress. Somehow I won't be surprised if those names turn out to have some kind of hidden meaning. overreacting much?

It sounds interesting.. I like Historical fiction for I may enjoy this as much as Artemis Fowl..

At a glance, the cover looked like a Philip Reeve book to me.. </random>
"My tongue will tell the anger of my heart or else my heart concealing it will break and rather than it shall, I will be free even to the uttermost, as I please, in words."

"Talk not to me: I will go sit and weep
Till I can find occasion of revenge."

I see how they could have sci-fi set in the 19th century but how can it be historical sci-fi set in the 19th century?
Official Mascot of the AFC Secret Agents

Well, John the Baptist after torturing a thief
Looks up at his hero the Commander-in-Chief
Saying, "Tell me great hero, but please make it brief
Is there a hole for me to get sick in?"

The Commander-in-Chief answers him while chasing a fly
Saying, "Death to all those who would whimper and cry"
And dropping a bar bell he points to the sky
Saying, "The sun's not yellow it's chicken"
-Tombstone Blues, Bob Dylan
