I don't mind Lady Root so much-- because honestly Holly being the first LEP female honestly always felt wrong and terribly sexist-- especially for a society that's supposedly far more cultured than the Mud Men. Gender discrimination should be a thing of the past for them, and was really only relevant to put more weight on the character of Holly in the first book.
She could be a pioneer in other ways-- the first Elf in the unit, if need be. But Holly is so much more than 'the first female'-- she's a maverick and her gender shouldn't have anything to do with that.
For me, Root's character should be male because of the specific father-daughter like relationship he and Holly develop up until The Opal Deception. It's his character development that is one of the more striking ones next Artemis's own development. So Root as female kind of rubs me wrong. But as Trouble said, Julia Root better be the best damn Root ever for them to justify changing his character.I'm still pretty miffed about Root, as he was just an iconic character for the first half of the series, but well, all I can really say is that Julia Root better be kick ass. But in the case of Holly, I'm just... Disney better have good explainations for casting a child in the role of an adult. I mean... maybe they just don't want to use a lot of CGI? But even that doesn't make sense because techincally as a dwarf, Mulch is several inches shorter than an elf. So I don't know. It's confusing and infuriating that they can't follow the source material correctly, but well, I'm still giving it a chance, but so far I don't have high hopes for the movie. I'm thinking it might end up like Percy Jackson.
Yes exactly! Holly and Root's relationship is one of the biggest things in the series for me! But perhaps they'll be doing sort of a mother-daughter thing with them, which could work I suppose? For me, Root's character should be male because of the specific father-daughter like relationship he and Holly develop up until The Opal Deception. I did take a look to find out how young Lara, Holly's actress is. She appears to be 15, which isn't as young as I thought she was. Still younger than I would have liked, but she's at least now as old as Alexa Vega was in Spy Kids, which makes me more comfortable. I think for now, we'll just have to see.
