what is it with black-haired boys?

Postby evil pixie » Sat Oct 04, 2008 12:49 am

a lot of the books include black-haired boys as main characters. just for examples, AF, HP, percy jackson and the olympians series.
not that I'm against it, but why?
I like the word evil. Scramble it a little, and you get vile and live. Good on the other hand, is just a command to go do.-Jodi Picoult, The Tenth Circle

Black, hair sybols, darkness and also, characterizes a person. Most people have brown on blond, hair except for Asian and African people. So most people don't see much black haired, Europeans or Americans. Also black, is just a colour. Of boldness and many other things, if a person has black hair. Jet black hair also is considered handsome and tough, many adventurers have black hair. Most people don't truly like adventures. For some reason mostly dark haired people. I don't understand it, but life is werid at times.
Also known as Dark Star.

I guess it's just a popular main character color. Brown is too bland, blond is too stereotyped, and red is too rare.

I dunno.... Maybe it's just because black (or very dark brown) is a pretty generic hair color? Plus, there are just as many examples of people that don't have black hair: Edward from Twilight has coppery hair, Charlie Bone has chestnut, Will Parry from His Dark Materials is blonde, Peter Pevensie the High King from Narnia is also blonde, Miles Wednesday from The Wednesday Tales is a brunette..... The list goes on and on. All very central characters, and all boys without black hair. And don't even get me started on un black haired girls! (Gilda Joyce, Lyra Silvertounge, Bella Swann, Meggie from Inkheart)

It's the character, not the hair color, that matters (boy, that sounded like a moral or a proverb or something in some strange way).

Doesn't really matter if there are many books without major characters with black hair.

Black represents evilness, darkness, complexity. It's a good reason to have black hair on the major characters,

I wouldn't... Still, for example Artemis. He has all three characteristics, and what about Ranger Apprentice? Dark, and complex.

Black doesn't always suggest evil, or darkness. Complexity and Strength are characteristics of Black, as is Purity ( a more obscure one to be true, but how varying is black? Not much  )
'What do people call you?'
'You mean human people, or other demons?'
'Demons.'
'Oh...right. They call me Number One.'
'Number One?'
'That's right. It's not much of a name, but it's all I have. And I console myself with the fact that it's better than Number Two.'

Darkness, and state of mind.

If you are not Asian, Black or any of the naturally black haired races, then black hair can mean darkness in, or around the character.

Basically what has been said here, Black is strong, can be dark, dominant etc, etc.

But other than black hair has anyone noticed how hair+eyes are stereotyped in books?

(for men)
ex. blonde hair + blue eyes = total hottie everyone wants to date this guy
ex. Brown hair + brown eyes = really deep guy, is always nice, can always trust him
ex. Black hair + whatever colour eyes = the 'bad' guy in the story, can't trust him
ex. red hair + blue eyes = the class clown, always seems to come from Ireland

It gets even worse with girls!

lots of people think black is dominant in hair color
and it looks good on males
but it has to be compatable with their eye color.
percy- blue
harry-green
artemis-blue-black
it can't be brown
or black by itself.

you can pair black hair with any skin colour or eye colour. black haired people can be from any nationality. plus, black hair and white skin makes a stunning combination, and authors like their main characters to stand out.

Yes, good point. Black hair doesn't only make them stand out, but standing out generally means something special which makes that particular character deserving to be the main character. Actually about any eye color... I've never seen a black haired guy...that's not Asian, African or emo with black hair and brown eyes. But getting to the point...Having black hair and pale skin lets the author put in lots of depressing stories without making it seem OCC.

I realized that too. By the way, in response to an earlier post, Percy has green eyes. :lick:

Also blondes normally would have pale skin and then there'd be too much to contend with racism. Brown seems a little too friendly? Maybe because of "mouse brown"? Red heads seem to to generally come with fiery girls and I suppose red heads seem to region-specific? *throws hands* I give up.
