Argh- I've been waiting for ages to get a chance to comment on this book, but I've either been away or busy with offline life in general, so... sorry this is coming more than a week after this thread was started.
I really, really loved this book. I don't think I'd quite put it on my list of favorites, but it's very close.
Rochenut, I agree with you about the history- I don't know all that much about Afghan history myself, but it was still easy to understand what was going on regardless. Lethe, I'm guessing you didn't miss much.
All in all- beautiful story, wonderful writing, and overall excellent book. This'll definitely warrant a re-read; I get the feeling that (much like Never Let Me Go) it's one of those books that is even better the second time.
